"make my heart sad?" WTF? people actually say this to their kids? is this some 'new' parenting technique?

Although I confess to also envisioning this being said by a stereotypical NewYork Jewish or Catholic Italian Mom guilting her kids into doing things. Loudly, and with the accents and the hand waving. Kind of like that Mom on the tv show, Big Bang Theory.
Catholic Guilt. It is imperative that it be passed down to the next generation. LOL
