Stuck in the Middle

So,
I write this series and I had the bulk of it written about a year ago. Unfortunately due to an EPIC fail on the part of my back-up and my computer (and maybe me)-- I lost the entire series which had already gone over 100 thousand words. If you pay attention to my site-- you'd realize that's not exactly out of the norm for me on the series front. I write big, epic things because that's how my brain works.
I break my work down into "short stories" or in the case of the series that is the problem "episodes". I do this because I hate to leave a reader hanging for weeks with a half-completed idea. Most do consider my series works Works In Progress and that's fine as long as they realize that some of them may never end in my mind. LOL.
So-- I'm supposed to be writing the next episode in Sentinels of Atlantis and in the original series (epic loss-see above)-- I did have an episode in the series dealing with the events of The Storm from the canon episode of Stargate: Atlantis. The thing is that--I wrote that before TPTB lied to us and cancelled our show. When that happened-- I lost a great deal of respect for the canon aspects of the show. Having realized this about myself-- I do try to be careful not let rocks fall and kill EVERYONE. Nor have I set fire to my mental set so that everyone on the show DIAF.
That being said-- I am having a hard time following my own original plans when it comes to The Storm episode and what I have plotted for my next episode of Sentinels of Atlantis. Last night I did some yoga and thought about it-- and just decided "fuck it and do it different" which is pretty interesting to think when one is very very relaxed. So, I'm going to do it different and since I was never a slave to canon the results should be pretty cool.

Date: 2010-04-10 11:54 pm (UTC)Hmm, I think you should save what you can for sentimentalities sake, and then just do what feels right. I notice some of your best efforts, and that is coming from a stunning range and set of series, sort of start with cannon and then veer off to the left. Chuckles, using elements of cannon is what some of the most creative, and intriguing stories do. I was rereading your Blair/Jim Sentinel story, and noticing you had Carson in there as a Baby Guide.
Grins sheepishly, I was trying to figure out a way, a sensible way for Jim, and Blair to meet Rodney, and John. Nothing came to me, but I was certainly twisting into to knots trying because it would be so fascinating. Ah, well, I'll leave the creative, interesting stuff in your stories up to you. You do such a great job, it's not like you need help. I am sorry for the loss of fic, but sometimes as irritating as it is, the universe has other ideas, grins. Good luck, and great job. -SB

Date: 2010-04-11 12:27 am (UTC)You're a much better writer than those hired by TPTB.
Go for it.:)

Date: 2010-04-11 01:17 am (UTC)I love when writers put their own spin on the episodes, makes it more interesting. In any case, I started losing love for the show as it progressed, and I never finished watching s5. So hey, AU AWAY!

Date: 2010-04-11 04:52 am (UTC)As long as you keep John and Rodney alive I think you could do pretty much anything and I'd find it awesome.

Date: 2010-04-11 01:00 pm (UTC)Canon? What canon?
Date: 2010-04-11 03:54 pm (UTC)I will read pretty much anything you write, as evidenced by my breaking a longstanding "BDSM? Huge girly EW!" and loving the hell out of Ties that Bind, especially anything having to do with Gerard or Syed or any other Dom who wants to "take a ride on that Marine" lusting after John, but I digress.
While "The Storm" and "The Eye" were some of the better efforts of the SGA cast a crew, I am in awe of the spins, twists and high polishes you put on canon in your AUs. I'm still waiting for the one where they turn on the interdimensional bridge and two things happen:
A certain level 4 Sentinel meets a specific dysfunctional Domme, wrinkles up her nose and asks "What the hell is wrong with you?" but before she can get the whole question out, her Guide has skinned the Domme out for a throw rug;
and/or
A certain level eleventy Guide goes bug-eyed and asks "That's all consensual? Seriously?" but before he can finish the question a certain level eleventy Sentinel says "No, the weird part is that they think this is all temporary" and a certain "temporary" pair has the grace to look abashed.
Re: Canon? What canon?
Date: 2010-04-25 07:16 am (UTC)Gosh--what would happen if all of my Rodney's ended up in the same room together?
I don't know--but it would be BRILLIANT.
I can see the McKay in WHMB looking at the Sheppard from TTB and thinking "Yeah, I'd let him spank me if he had lil Marine heart set on it."

Date: 2010-04-25 08:32 am (UTC)It takes a writer of skill to be able to carry of an AU convincingly without veering too far into OOC territory. You've got the skill and the imagination to create something truly magnficent without losing the aspects of the characters that we really, truly love.
So I can't wait to see what you come up with (no pressure, k?!) because it's going to be just fantastic.

Date: 2010-04-27 04:32 am (UTC)I mean cannon Keller would be a real problem. But to be honest I was more interested on the effects of the bond between Rodney and John

So when does the next Ties that Binds come out?
