One of the most infuriating parts of having a large body of work online is that it causes people to poke and prod me for more of a specific thing. Sometimes they read a work that is more than a decade old and demand more of it. Or they find a single line in a fic that they think is absolutely fascinating, and act like I’m silly for never exploring it.

Or I edit a single line in a fic when I’m reading my own shit and I get ten emails about it because how dare I change a sentence in a work that is eight years old. I’ve clearly ruined their whole life and made things difficult by changing a few words. I’m not even exaggerating about this. I did that and I got emails within a week. I got an email about it last week actually where the person was searching for a fic that had that specific line in it and they just couldn’t find it and they were so sure it was my fic and can I please help them. It was so overtly obvious they were complaining about it and not just because it was the FIFTH email they’d sent me about the same line of dialogue I’d edited in the first part of the Sentinels of Atlantis.

I know, as a writer, that I can’t predict what a reader will get out of my work or what parts they will ultimately become very attached to. I also know that people read the same things over and over again (much like they watch the same media repeatedly) because it helps with anxiety. If they read something new, they might get a nasty surprise. So, I do understand the comfort that can be had in finding an author you trust to warn appropriately with a large body of work you can swim in when the world is difficult.

But, for the love of Pedro Pascal, please stop prodding me for shit you want to see. It drives me nuts.

I recently posted part two in my Arda Exodus series (info below) and I was pondering my complicated relationship with Harry Potter, both the content and the fandom itself. I've come to realize that out of all the fandoms that I write in--I don't love it. I think I did at one time but the older I get the less tolerant I've become of parts of the original material. The bigotry in the material itself is so problematic that sometimes it leaves me breathless with rage. I find no joy in the fandom itself, either. Frankly, for every amazing reader I have in the HP fandom, I have ten that are absolute jackholes.

Reader entitlement is nothing new in fandom or for me personally. I was slapped in the face with it within hours of posting my first story. And, no, that's not exaggeration. Each fandom has its own brand of entitlement when it comes to readers. Each are demanding and greedy in their own way, but there's something special about HP fans and I don't mean that as a compliment.

What I do love is my own work in the HP fandom (and I realize how arrogant that sounds, your opinion on my arrogance is undesired). I love the world building, the magical theories, and the character work I've done. I especially love my ensemble of original characters and the stories that I can tell with them. I'm still brimming with ideas for the fandom and my favorite pairings.

Recently, and you might have noticed, I've been writing in the 9-1-1 fandom. Honestly, I've rarely seen anything like those so-called fans. I'm so put off by the readers and some of the other writers in the fandom that I no longer read in the fandom at all unless I know the author personally. The readers are awful and I don't trust most of the authors. I don't trust the writers to warn appropriately, I don't trust them to be honest in their craft, and I don't trust them not to pander to fucked up readers and their ridiculous, unfounded, immature, and uneducated opinions regarding characterization.

Trust isn't required to write in a fandom, but it is required to read. And if you can't trust a writer to tell you a good story in an honest way, then reading their work is impossible.

That's just my meandering thoughts about fandom at present.

Anyways, my newest offering in a fandom I don't love:

I've started my second project on RT and I'm pretty amused with myself. Mind the warnings.

I have two projects this month, but I'm uncertain if I will to both. My zero draft for Fireborn looks to be about 50kish. Who knows? I'm not going to stress myself out by trying to shove it all in a box.

I have Fireborn which is a Harry Potter story featuring two original main characters. Just go with it-it won't hurt you too much.

Summary:

Razel Fireborn, only son of Chieftain Ragnok Windrider, has never had any interest in taking a mate. Politics and social mores demand a certain standard of behavior from him, and the choices he makes have the potential to impact his people far into the future. In the midst of the most important magical endeavor his people have ever undertaken, he meets a dverger that catches his interest, which is annoying because he doesn't have time for that kind of thing.

My second project is a 9-1-1 fusion with a ghost/paranormal investigation show called Dead Files titled Intangible. Evan Buckley is a medium. I'm deeply amused by my plot.

Summary:

Evan Buckley, a popular medium on the Beyond Channel, needs a new cameraman. He's always needing a new cameraman because shit gets too real and no amount of advanced warning seems to help. Bobby Nash, the producer of the show, decides try things from a different angle and Eddie Diaz, formerly of the US Army, is his solution.
