It's what we in fandoms with British people/or totally set in England, call a person who reads over a fic and point out non-British speech patterns, spellings and so forth. :)
Hey come on, I get introduced to new terms all the time, especially when I join a new 'old' fandom, or just as my fandoms grow and expand! I've only known the 'brit-picker' for a couple of months :)
Oh, gods - Sherlock fic from you might break me with its awesomeness! Can I volunteer to do art for it in advance? You know I love to make you shinies. :-)
Reminded me that i had a weir dream where you were writing a gay plot with "les liaisons dangereuses" book. John was le marquis de Merteuil and Rodney le vicomte de Valmont, seducting a young tennis player Paul de Volanges who was cast by Chris Colfer from Glee...... I was helping for the french writing lol ! Need to stop to drink and read old french books.
Me, Me! *runs in circles then falls over at the thought of Keira Sherlock fic* Ok I admit I make a rubbish beta usually 'cos my grammar is bloody dreadful but brit picking I am good at ... although you may get random explanations of how the British policing/judicial system is different from American, or why we use certain words/phrases rather than just a correction... I get stuck in teacher mode.
I know enough about Britpicking to know that we're pretty much all "Yanks" who live in the "Colonies," and the usual lift, torch, boot, bonnet and flat -- but I'm Texan by birth, Californian by upbringing, scarred for life by 13 years in South Florida and currently a happy resident of Georgia. I'm not sure if I could even get regional American usage perfectly accurate with that background, let alone Britpick. ;)
I grew up in Amish country, still get corrected by people who aren't from Lancaster County about my grammar. Then there's the really bad scots/irish/elizabethan english accent I try when I play at the renaissance faire. When faire season is over it takes me a few weeks to stop greeting people with "God save thee" or "fare thee well!"
I probably wouldn't be a good one to help out, since my own grasp of the English language is, unique?! LOL
I just let out a squee so loud the cat ran away and hid under the bed. The thought of you writing Sherlock is just too spifftastic! Sherlock fic is my newest love! I was talking about the show at work today! I was told to shut up about it already.
So glad to see this. I just love your fics and seeing you're working on a new one is just an amazing gift. I'm sorry I can't help. But if you ever need help for French... I'm sure I'm not the only one who will volunteer.
Sherlock! Really? That is simply too awesome for words. I have to go dream sweet Sherlock dreams now. And in my dreams Rodney and John pop over to London so that John and John can empathize with one another while Sherlock and Rodney try to out snark each other. Sweet, Sweet Dreams.
You realize if you do this, a whole other set of people are going to hound you. Of course, you will also pull those people into SGA fandom, I'm sure, which may actually lead to a revitalization of the fandom in general.
I'm convinced that this is entirely good. Carry on.
Wow ... Just Wow!! This vid just blew me away. And the idea of you writing Sherlock .... I feel faint!!
As I am not British nor do I play one in another life, I must instead resort to bribery. Therefore, I will send you the chocolate of your choice (from Belgium) if you will crossover Sherlock with SGA. Heck, would you prefer Cheese from Holland??? I'd offer my first born but truthfully, he'd probably interrupt the creative process and definitely don't want that. Anything -legal - from The Continent that may help get you in the mood, name it. For this xover, I will be your loyal slave, ahem, minion.
I have been wishing sooo hard that you would write Sherlock/John. I could see that it was just your style.
Of course, that also means that you will take longer on some of your other projects, but I'm willing to wait.
Don't know how much, if any, Sherlock/John fics you have read by other writers, but if I may recommend one? There are several that I like and have saved, but this, this one is, at least to my mind, one of the best.
I see you have no shortage of volunteers, so I'll just take my folding chair and my thermos and go join the queue to wait patiently for your next fic. Happy to help, should you need me - I do some professional proofreading and I'm English.
Btw, I'm still blaming you for my dive into Harry Potter fandom, which I'd successfully resisted right up until you posted your story. *shakes fist* How many more fandoms must I obsess over, damn you evil temptress!
By which I mean, of course, thank you so much! Have all the internet cookies ever! :D
I think I'm actually happy the DDoS attacks kept me from seeing this until this morning as I may have squealed embarrassingly loudly at the thought of you writing Sherlock.
English major here, i know a few differences between RP (or BBC or Queens English) and American English. If you need (and i do snicker at that thought) help, i will be honoured to offer my assistance. I might need to stand in a huge queue though. I am Polish btw, but living in UK for some time now…
Thank you :) You're not the first one to say so :D I wish I could take the credit (or give it to anyone else for that matter), but it's an old anonymous .gif from Way Back When I didn't know what copyrights were that I found on my HD and it's quirky enough to match my nature :D
Because I've been on a Sherlock kick for the past two weeks and then the past three days have been steady Adam Lambert on the stereo and every time I heard this song I kept thinking about Sherlock saying this to John.
Of course, now I've got this image in my head of them in the Ties That Bind universe. *glares at bunny*

Date: 2011-04-07 03:33 am (UTC)I live in the UK...and my English is often commented upon as being 'Victorian'!
However, you already have plenty of willing volunteers.... Still, if you need any more help!
By the way....if ever you need to write a German character, I want my name on the top of your list of potential helpers!
