5 Degrees of Addiction
May. 4th, 2011 05:56 pmFive addictions that I should probably see a therapist about but I'm not gonna because I'm quite satisfied with my current circumstances.
1. Purses & Bags of various sizes. I own over 300 at any given time and distribute at least fifty or so throughout the women in my family on a yearly basis.
2. The Internet. I check my various websites and LJ while my first pot of coffee is brewing. Not having Internet for several days was so isolating and horrific that I'm firm in my belief that I now completely categorize "roughing it" as a Dial Up Internet connection.
3. Coffee. I can easily spend 75 or a 100 bucks a month on coffee that I brew in my own home and budget myself 35 dollars a month for buying coffee outside my home. The Cock Provider isn't allowed to touch my coffee without permission. The last time he did he had to drive across town in the morning rush hour before work to replace my supply of Kona or I made it clear he wouldn't be welcome home after work.
4. Bitching. The thing is I really enjoy bitching. I'm perfectly capable of bitching about practically anything because I rarely encounter something I don't have an opinion about-one way or another.
5. Angry Birds. What? I didn't have power or Internet for DAYS. Charging my phone in my car was all I had going on and I've got 3 versions of that game. I massacred so many birds and pigs that I'm surprised PETA hasn't shown up at my house with signs.

Date: 2011-05-04 11:00 pm (UTC)I am also hopelessly addicted to the internet and start going to withdrawal if there's a few hours of blackout. I don't think I'd survive more than 3 days without it.
Re: My 5 degrees of addiction
Date: 2011-05-04 11:23 pm (UTC)Zuma, Coke, & Paper Notebooks really do it for me too.
I especially like Composition Notebooks -- wide rule and only in the Mead brand.

Date: 2011-05-05 04:28 pm (UTC)Dial up connection
Date: 2011-05-04 11:39 pm (UTC)Also official, Wordpress hates dial up with a passion. But I'm coping. Slowly. I might have to pick your brains, Keira, to actually get my site up and running. Tips and pointers would be completely helpful. LOL Return is nearly finished and ready for beta and the next chapter is mapped out. I'd like to have the site up in time to post it.
On addictions: I'm addicted to the internet, no question. During the major blackout a few years ago, I was four days without and was well into withdrawl symptoms by the time it came back up. Let's make a communal pact to NEVER HAVE THAT HAPPEN AGAIN.
Oh so true!
Date: 2011-05-04 11:41 pm (UTC)1. The Internet - It's a joke to my in-laws but I was deadly serious when I told my husband that he may enjoy camping, but if I was going to go camping, it would be with internet available and HE was going to pack in and out my laptop. I also made him buy me an 3G phone as soon as they were available in the area.
2. Tea - While my soft-boiled egg is boiling and my toast is toasting, my tea is steeping - precisely 212 degree water for four minutes. I spend more on tea than any other food or beverage product in my budget, excepting alcohol.
3. Bags, Purses and Bins - The last time we moved, I literally had a CRATE of purses, bags and totes, all lovingly cleaned and stuffed with tissue paper. There is little that I love more while shopping than finding the 'perfect' bag for my purposes.
4. Food and Cooking - Shopping for food, for ingredients, reading recipes, preparing food, planning to bake, cook, whatever - I love it.
5. Sarcasm - My life would not be complete without it. One of the major attractions of my husband before we dated was his cutting sarcasm. And our kids are growing up with the same sense of sarcasm - it's AWESOME.

Date: 2011-05-05 12:28 am (UTC)(Online) Gaming: The internet is the mechanism, but it’s the competition that sucks me in. I’ve played poker online for years, until the US DOJ decided to ban it last month. Now I survive on Rummikub, World Winner, and WoW.
Good chocolate: I spend more on chocolate than I do on coffee. Forget that Godiva crap. I have gone far afield for Leonidas & Neuhaus, and have some in the house, always. Meanwhile my coffee is Maxwell House. :p
Pets: I didn’t have a pet until I was in my 30’s. Now I don’t think I’ll ever be without at least one non-human roommate. Living in a condo has limited my options somewhat - Newfoundlands are unfortunately out of the picture. :p But I start and end my days with a cat on my pillow and it’s bliss.
Reading: I’d say books but they’re a small part of my obsession. Books, magazines, blogs, newspapers, livejournal, etc. etc. etc. I’ve tried audiobooks, but I’m not a huge fan. I have to have the printed words on the page.
My mp3 player: The NYC area is teeming with people, everywhere, all the time. I can’t function out in the world without music as a buffer. Everyone here has plugs in their ears. It gives you a bit more virtual space in the crowds.

Date: 2011-05-05 02:34 am (UTC)2. Internet -- even more so now that I have this laptop. I pretty much have to turn off the internet conneciton to get anything done. Mostly it's blogs.
3. Tea -- Earl Grey is my favorite, currently Caravan Earl Grey from Davids Tea is my favorite earl grey. I love different types of tea for different types of things though. You have dessert teas, morning teas, afternoon teas. Herbal teas for late aqt night and for icing. Love tea.
4. Zaitoichi movies -- I love the old subtitled Zaitoichi movies and can often be found watching one while drinking tea :D.
5. Chocolate -- Love chocolate. Mostly dark chocolate, but not the bitter stuff.

Date: 2011-05-05 03:14 am (UTC)And tea, oh how I love my tea. Right now, my morning tea of choice is a lime infused Earl Grey, brewed double strength and served with a dollop of white honey.
Sadly, I've been unable to even enjoy the smell of chocolate after a difficult pregnancy with my son.

Date: 2011-05-05 04:21 am (UTC)1. The Internet. Yeah, I'm a news junkie, and a bookworm, and spend far too much time reading blogs, CNN, BBC, NPR... and whatever else catches my eye.
2.Information. Which ties into addiction number one, because I love researching and the internet is a prime playground for looking things up. When I stay focused, that's great, but sometimes, I follow tangents and will get so lost on offshoots that I forget where I was originally going.
3. Chocolate. It is my drug of choice. Gives me the migraines from hell sometimes, but if I couldn't have chocolate, I think I'd die. Seriously. I gave it up for Ten. Fucking. Years. Ten. TEN. Because my migraines were so horrific that... I'd do anything not to hurt that bad. Now I know to check cocoa butter content (the higher, the worse my migraine) and I've learned to let it melt on my tongue to savor the flavor so I'll eat less, but when I'm stressed out... gimme chocolate and back away slowly!
4. Writing. It hurts not to write, and you'd think I'd be much more prolific fanfiction-wise as a result, but the writer's block... eurgh. Besides, I think my Harry Potter train done run out of steam, you know? But I write, constantly. I keep a notebook in my purse for scribbling ideas in, and have even started using my iPod Touch for note taking purposes. There is much slashy goodness in the fat little notebooks in my bottom drawer, which need to come back out and see the light of day.
5. Pens and pencils. Yes, I have a huge pen fetish. Not just any pens, though. They have to be special. They have to have sleek lines and write smoothly. They must have the right flow of ink... it's hard to explain. And pencils... I love pencils that have a smooth, dark lay on paper, 6B is my absolute favorite. Blame my graphic design background. I have swiped pens from the Husbandly One because I liked the way they write or the way they felt in my hand. And I have hung on to pencils that were good enough to qualify as The Perfect Pencil until they were veritable nubs, because... well, it's a fetish, do I really have to explain it? I even have a bag in my purse devoted just to pencils and pens. If I let you borrow a pen, it's a huge sign of trust because... I don't share my pens and pencils with just anybody.
Sad, innit?
5 addictions
Date: 2011-05-05 01:22 pm (UTC)2. Internet. Which makes sense since I'm earning my degree online. I check Keira's sites several times a day. I also think it's awesome that if I want to learn about something all I have to do is google it.
3. Tote bags & hobo bags. I don't think I own a real purse. I love hobo bags - they're just comfortable to carry around. Tote bags? I have no freakin' idea why. But I use them for lots of "stuff".
4. Slash. Enough said.
5. NCIS. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I am absolutely addicted to that show. Mark Harmon is yummy. Yesterday I spent the morning, all morning, trawling sites trying to find out who is getting killed off in next week's episode. And yes, I read Gibbs/Tony slash. sigh.

Date: 2011-05-05 02:03 pm (UTC)when our landline- and with it our internet- didn't work for more than a day, I used to spend an hour a day at mcdonalds with my laptop as they offer an hour of free wireless internet a day - and it is the closest place around that offers wireless at all
2. my favourite band
the money I spent on merch and following them on tour could easily pay rent for a couple of months. I tend to visit at least 2 concerts a year, above 8 for the last 4 years (maximum was 37 times in a year-but I worked for them for 25 of those) won't see them this year though the head of the bands first baby was born a couple of weeks ago, no europe tour this year *sigh*

Date: 2011-05-05 02:06 pm (UTC)I have caught myself in an argument with myself about the fact that I can soo fit one more episode in and still get enough sleep for the next day - trying to talk myself into episode 5 for that evening/night
4. travelling, I can't as much as I want but I am still very crazy about it and order brochures and stuff a lot, and even love to help others plan their holidays
5. berries - if my stomach wouldn't kill me I'd try to live on berries most of the time, frozen or fresh, usually plain
I only get five?
Date: 2011-05-05 02:24 pm (UTC)2. The Internet. I foresee this being a common thread throughout fandom. I'm still rattling the cage of the advanced tech services data guy to get the bootleg hotspot set up in our new office building so I can surf sites blocked by the company firewall on my Kindle because I was too cheap to buy 3G.
3. Diet Coke. You should see the looks when I arrive at the office in the dead of winter, remove outerwear, and crack open a frosty can.
4. Stirring the pot. Sort of a subset of bitching, to which I would be equally addicted if a long line of very strong women role models at work hadn't "taken me in hand." I still nurture the Inner Bitch, but in a corporate cube farm, she has to be subtle. There's a lot Rodney McKay says that, if repeated at a lower volume, actually works quite well.
5. Scrabble on my Kindle, followed by Panda Poets. Top score on Panda Poets is over two million points, and I have played two games ending with one panda, zero skulls. I can beat the AI on "normal" Scrabble routinely by 100 points, but equally routinely lose, lose, lose when I reset to "hard." I think it makes stuff up.

Date: 2011-05-05 05:33 pm (UTC)Tesco Value Midget Gems - 200 g bag with 800 calories - I easily demolish a bag a day (more fattening addiction than your fic... sadly easier accessible at work!)
Tea - can't do without a cuppa - strong, milky and 5 sweeteners
News - via internet, news channels or even just the short radio update in the car - I have been known to switch of a John Barrowman CD for the news - see point 5
John Barrowman/Torchwood - an addiction I can't afford as much as I did... but looking up from my desk at work at his calendar... *aah*

Date: 2011-05-06 12:54 am (UTC)1. Coffee, first thing in the morning. Usually 1/2 a pot.
2. Pogo Games' Boggle Bash. Play for an hour while drinking coffee. Wakes up my brain.
3. Working out. Must do it every day or I feel like shit.
4. My rabbit. Girls, you know what I'm talking about. If you don't, then you need to visit Adam&Even and find out!
5. Diet Coke, even though I am trying to kick the habit.
