I'd like to write a full on threesome (John/Miko/Rodney) fic. I've actually wanted to write it for a long time -- before I even got into the whole slash writing thing. Why haven't I? Well, I already get a lot of flak from people who wish I didn't write slash and I guess I'd rather not hear crap from people who read slash but hate threesome and/or het fic. I guess I'd rather not get smacked at from both ends of a whip. Which is a pretty startling realization that I can probably blame on my therapist. I don't think I realized the full extent of my avoidance on this issue until recently.
This crosses my mind because I was reading through some feedback offered on a fic and quite a few people admitted liking it until the fic became a threesome and then they were all up in arms about it. It pissed me off for the writer and I'd have said something if it was a fandom I participate in. I'm all about showing my ass after all but I'd rather not wade into a new fandom to do it. People in the SGA fandom probably expect me me to be a bitch and I figure there is no need to let everyone in the Harry Potter fandom in on that fact just yet.
Of course, considering some of the emails I exchanged with a few readers regarding Birth of the Serpent King and my inability to measure how much I didn't give a fuck what they thought about my overwhelming use of cliches (which was on purpose BTW), or the characterization of Snape or the level of maturity I slapped on Ron Weasley or how it was Harry/Draco and they would have much preferred that it be Harry/Ron or Harry/Hermoine because I just "destroyed" the Golden Trio with my fic. Well, they are just LUCKY I didn't indulge in my most favorite cliches: Evil Weasleys and Dark Lord Dumbledore. LMAO.
It might horrify some of you to know that originally I had every intention of having John collar Miko in Ties That Bind but by part three the dynamic for a threesome just didn't work for me as a writer. That is really the only reason it didn't happen despite my desire not to get bitched at from die hard slash readers.
It pisses me off a little because I don't even normally let people who PAY to read my work influence me like this.
BAH.

Date: 2011-07-20 07:05 pm (UTC)I've seen the bitching about becoming a threesome in reviews on one of my all time fave, a brilliant story, HP fics. I don't get it. There was no way it couldn't be a threesome--the other couple is established and wonderful, and Harry organically becomes part of it over time. And, again, from the start the threesome is stated.
I think a John/miko/Rodney scene would be interesting. I loved the platonic sensuality of the pampering scene in Ties.

I love your TtB universe so much I loaded it on my gay bffs ipas when he headed to Europe for vacation last year so he could read it as well.

Date: 2011-07-20 07:10 pm (UTC)That or her and Rodney cooperating in an effort to get John to relax. Maybe with Rodney browbeating John to let them spoil him. And then Miko and Rodney seducing him through dinner and then leaving him a boneless, very satisfied, John Sheppard puddle of goo.
So... please write a threesome? Pretty please? With an orange fleece jacket (or cherry) on top?

Date: 2011-07-20 07:12 pm (UTC)It is totally understandable. Having people attack you constantly is tiring and infuriating. Why would you want that?
That said. I thought the scene in Sentinels of Atlantis where Miko imagined a threesome with Rodney and John was full of extremely hot awesomeness. So if you decided to write a threesome story for them anyway I'd be very excited!

Date: 2011-07-20 07:28 pm (UTC)I've had a long term threesome sneak up on me in it but as they're not main characters I didn't really think about it
I think I know which fic you refer to re the threesome feedback and it was a surprise to me but it certainly didn't spoil it... made me rethink my expectations of relationships and why I was expecting a m/m couple only - the above scenes had been written before reading the story and it widened my horizons as to the richness of relationships
and now I will shut up :D

I don't really have to sleep... so it's okay if I go read it now... mhmmmmm J/T/I

Date: 2011-07-20 07:30 pm (UTC)As for the Serpent King... Why are people whining about all the cliches? There was a note about the intentional use of every cliche in the book last time I've read it (which is Monday :P), so their complains are invalid and you should do what I do with students that email me questions about matters that are answered on the website: send back the link and label them as idiots unworthy of your time *firm nod*
I also agree with
The only accusation I feel is valid when sending a feedback to a writer is "OMG why isn't there more of this? I am begging you write more! You have to or I will DIE!"

Date: 2011-07-21 09:32 am (UTC)On the subject of threesomes - a couple of years ago I was on and organized tour *coughContikicough* and had one of the other girls on tour ask to share our room as there was a threesome happening in hers. My roommate and her both looked at me rather oddly when I asked who the other bloke was..... ;)

Date: 2011-07-20 07:48 pm (UTC)As for threesomes, they work when the characters are genuinely in love with each other. It seems in some of your established verses, John and Rodney are in such love with each other, that we can't imagine that they would include someone else on a permanent basis.

Date: 2011-07-20 07:49 pm (UTC)I don't understand people that bitch so much about pairings they don't like. It's a big internet, I'm sure there are other places where they can go to indulge in their OTP all they want.
While I do have favorite pairings, I'll read almost anything as long as it's well written. That's how I've been introduced to new fandoms and genres; a favorite author wrote something new, and I liked what I read.
It's certainly happened with your writing. You've had me reading het (and trying to find more John S./Laura C. fic), and reading BDSM even though those aren't things I usually read. I'm well aware that the back button is there for a reason, and if I find something isn't to my taste, I'll use it.

Date: 2011-07-20 07:57 pm (UTC)Second, I consider most of your works only secondarily dirty and primarily about the people. People that you craft so perfectly that you've made me want to go back to every story I've ever written and do better so that readers will adore my characters and my universes just as much as I've adored yours. Whatever complaints people may have about the slash, or the cliches, or the threesomes, just goes to show that they're missing the point. The only reason your stories are quite so smokin' hot is that we adore the characters as you've written them and we want them to have the happiness you're giving them in your works. (Well... perhaps not the *only* reason they're hot, but that's beside the point.)
Third, I've always considered a story worth writing if it will mean something to at least one reader. They and I might be the only two people on the planet who think the story was anything good, (and believe you me, that's happened to me before) but at least I made them happy. You've got *so* *many* people who adore your words, so your measure of success is probably much greater than mine, as it deserves to be, but I want you to know, no matter what you write, at least one person will always, ALWAYS adore it.

Date: 2011-07-21 11:20 am (UTC)Just ditto to everything you've just said and emphatically regarding the first paragraph (second week of being a die hard H/D shipper here). You haven't happened to find a Draco is a Veela story where pairing with Harry *isn't* required to either keep Draco alive or under control have you? This is also a blantant plea/beg for recs of all varities of H/D stories.

Date: 2011-07-20 08:34 pm (UTC)I've gotten to where I don't read the comments any more when I'm reading fic, though I am trying to be better about actually commenting. There are people out there who have their little ol' hearts just set in stone on certain pairings, and if you write something that knocks against that pairing, well... you just must be the devil incarnate to even think it, much less write it. I'm not sure why this is, because... why? Seriously, why? They're fictional characters, the whole damn point of fanfiction is to play with them, shake things up, or write it the way you see it. So what if you give the characters back rumpled, reeking of sex, and with silly grins on their faces?
But I don't read comments much any more because I end up getting cranky and bitchy and grumpy, and if I get riled up enough, I'll feel the need to write something tart and to the point, and... yeah, not really into feeding wank trolls, unless I'm pissed off about something else, and then I look on it as a recreational sport. But other than offering support and praise to writers I enjoy, I don't go there. It's bad for my stomach. And vocabulary. Whoa, I'm in a mood, aren't I? Perhaps I should warn the kids to run for the hills while they can.
Personally? I have no trouble with threesomes. Reading them, I mean. Okay, that's it, you've sent me into a mental haze with that one.
Have I told you lately that I absolutely adore you? Yeah, well... take that as read. I do.

Date: 2011-07-20 09:36 pm (UTC)As long as I like the characters, and I think they have or would have good chemistry, I'm more than willing to give the pairing/threesome a shot.
I've never gotten why people seem to think they need to bitch about the pairing of a story. I mean, I can understand maybe if the author didn't state it, and it ended up being a squicky pairing (a big reason why I never read surprise!pairing stories). I won't read any story that states the pairing is a surprise, or gives one half of the pairing, with a question mark for the other half.
I've written threesomes before, and so far I've been lucky to not get people bitching at me, but in a story I'm currently working on, one pairing that starts out (the big fandom OTP) actually splits up and one of them goes with another canon character (eventually ending up a threesome that will likely raise a few eyebrows), and the other eventually ends up in a threesome with a canon character and an OC. I fully expect to get hate mail, bitching and moaning about bait and switch, bad pairings, etc., when it comes out, even though the story will have the pairings listed and a lengthy note. If they don't read the header fully, that's their problem, and I plan to tell them quite vocally to fuck off. Because I don't care. As I've developed the storyline, these are the pairings/threesomes that have developed, and they're staying.
Write what you want, what feels right for your stories. The entitled asshats who are gonna bitch are gonna find something to bitch about anyway, so you might as well write what you want.

Date: 2011-07-20 10:38 pm (UTC)As for fic, I will read het, slash (fem and male slash), threesome, moresome. All that matters to me is the quality of the story =D (and plot, d**** it, give me PLOT and good characterization and we all smiles) So if you ever get the urge and the inspiration coincides, I'm all for it with pom poms out waiting to cheer you on ;D

Date: 2011-07-20 11:10 pm (UTC)Sometimes a threesome works for me and sometimes not (usually not). It depends on how well written the story is. While the Anunnake Series worked for me most threesome's don't. It all depends on the writer. Poorly written stories are poorly written stories.
Personally, I like Harry and Draco together and can totally see evil Weasly's and Dumbledor. Don't get me started please as I actually have always felt that way about them from the beginning of the series.
