So,

I can't write and what I thought was a chest cold sneaking up on me after my FLU is actually 'walking fucking pneumonia'. That's what I get for having asthma and missing my pneumonia vaccine booster thingy back in August.

Anyways, I'm miserable and the one thing I like to do when I'm miserable is read fan fic (I think I share that hobby with some of you bitches). Now, I'm reading along and I stumble across this great summary which I won't mention here because of my less than favorable reaction upon clicking on the fic. The thing is that I try to think I'm open minded about pairings. Really. I read a variety of het and slash without a single problem in multiple fandoms. Of course, there are exceptions (like I hate Jennifer Keller and Ginny Weasley).

I click on this fic with the GREAT summary and premise and realize the pairing is Harry/Ginny instead of my preferred pairings of: Harry/Hermione OR Harry/Draco and what is my first thought?

"Oh, man, why would you RUIN a perfectly good idea with that lame ass pairing?"

Hypocrisy thy name is Keira.

I think that all the time >_> Or when a fandom has a predilection for certain things and I prefer the opposite.

But to each their own. Back buttons are awesome :P

Yeah I'm not big on the H/G pairing it's right up there with Hermione/Ron like we don't think she wouldn't kill him after three weeks.
I have to say I had never read a Harry/Draco till I read BotSK. Now I'm just trying to find more good ones.

If you need somthing to shock the H/G out of your brain I have Avenger fushion Pony porn! Yes I said it Pony Porn! that clears your brain just reading it.

There are some amazing, ongoing fic that are Harry/Draco (although she does mostly pair Ron/Hermione but not always) from [profile] lomonaaren... she has lots of finished fic but if you follow her, she puts out like a chapter of one of the half-a-dozen ongoing fics she's writing Every. Single. Day.

There's a awe-inspiring fic where Draco is a vampire and Harry is an Auror that is so beautifully written -- the imagery is spot on perfect and you can see the UST oozing out of the page. "Business Meeting" -- it's still a WIP but I promise it's worth searching for and reading.

Check her out!

I always rec The Sacrifices Arc (http://lightning.ffstories.net/viewseries.php?seriesid=1) by Lightningonthewave. It is long. VERY long. Its an entire re-write of all seven novels and is actually quite longer than JK's original series. It is far more darker and more twisted than canon HP, with a Slytherin!Harry and mentor!Severus. There are some rather brutal death scenes (not of anyone particularily important in canon HP) and the bad guys are evil and fucked up. All that aside, she really took JK's world and ran with it. I love the way she explored the way magic worked, in particular. We also get to see some characters in fascinating new lights (one of my favorites is probably Regulus Black) and all of them are so perfectly in-character while at the same time being refreshing and new and suited for the AU. There are a lot of original characters that build the world up, so you may need her character guide (http://lightningwave.livejournal.com/98058.html) to keep them all straight (I didn't have any problems, but I tend to read novels that are character-heavy). I will warn for dark!Dumbledore because I know some people really don't like that kind of thing, as well as the fact that Lily and James Potter are alive throughout the story.

Next, I would have to name Gold Tinted Spectacles (http://beren-writes.livejournal.com/5307.html) by [livejournal.com profile] beren_writes. It is a creature!fic, but one of the most fascinating and original ones I've ever seen. She completely invents her creature from the ground up and I loved it. Somewhat overly-sappy at times but I enjoy that kind of thing sometimes.

I would say almost anything by Vorbiza (http://www.hpfandom.net/eff/viewuser.php?uid=330), though especially Secrets (features daddy!Draco but doesn't focus on it), Malfoy Flavour (Harry-is-secretly-Severus'-son!fic), and Malfoy Child (deaged!Draco is taken care of by Harry).

Starts With a Spin (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=5601) by Maxine begins rather light-hearted and amusing but ends up with confused boys trying to figure out their loyalties and their relationship. (I just found out Maxine has been working on a new H/D, so if you like this one you might want to check out All the Answers (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=11724) like I really want to but unfortunately can't until Thanksgiving is over, darn it)

A Consummation Devoutly to be Wished (http://theguestroom.houseofhobbits.com/hp/Consummation.html) by Mirabella because the summary is: Draco is a veela. He needs to decide: mate with Harry Potter... or die. Of course, Draco choses death. Veela!Draco is rather cliche, but Mirabella makes it amusing as hell.

Finally, Snakes and Lions (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/gatewaygirl/SAL.html) by Gatewaygirl is largely about their friendship with very mild slash. I largely enjoyed it because it shows a realistic and gradual evolution of their relationship and keeps both in-character.

:)

Also, if you're in the mood for a REALLY long read, then I highly recommend The Sacrifices Arc by lightningonthewave. Its over 1.5K words, so I'm not kidding when I say its a long read. Its very AU, and get really dark and graphic in places. H/D, with some het and femme pairings. Oh, and she's also on Skyehawke.

like we don't think she wouldn't kill him after three weeks.

See, the only way Ron and Hermione ever made sense to me was if the HP 'verse is actually in the Ties That Bind 'verse, and she keeps him as a pet.

If the author felt bound by the parameters of mainstream commercial fiction where everyone has to live heterosexually ever after, Hermione and Draco would have been much more interesting (and likely to me, given all the character set ups.)

Ginny Weasely was absolutely ideal "canon fodder," or those characters we're supposed to love (but really don't miss) who die in dramatically appealing ways. I see Harry much more easily with an older, hotter witch.

All the pairing off and procreating at the end struck me as being very tacked on and really better left to the hands of fanfic writers.

Well was ment to be a nine or ten book series so maybe Ron body swapped with Charlie or something and we'll never know.
I think a TTB HP fic would be great. Ron can be the pet and she could still have Draco. But still with all the hair. Well at lest JK didn't have sparkaly vampiers.

Yes a TTB HPvers eppic would be wonderful! Keira how about it? Sounds like fun hun?

Ugh, that sucks. I'm so stubborn that I'll work around shit like this. If I really want to read something, I change the character in my head.

For example, I really, really hate Anna Paquin. When I read X-Men Movie 'Verse fanfic, in my head everybody else looks like their movie 'verse actor/actress, but Rogue looks more like she does in the comic book.

I've also just plain substituted actors/actresses when I don't like the real ones. Even if I have to pull up a pic of my choice for replacement and have it to one side of my screen, I'll do it.

When you really hate a character's personality, this may not work as well, but I've found that I can have a lot of leeway when I want to read something badly enough.

Ranting and bitching about it helps too :D

I have a thing with pneumonia, as in I get it like some people get a cold. Every time I have gotten walking pneumonia some smart ass always says "How could you not know you had pneumonia?" Makes me want to smack each and every one of them. I hope you get better quickly.

If the moon-brained idiot asking you that question is someone you see every day, you could always ask back, "How could you not know?" The one time I knew I had walking pneumonia, it was my college roommate who badgered me into the student health center because I'd been coughing for a month, and she figured any cough she'd learned to sleep through had gone on too long.

Joke was on Wisconsin girl, though. Doctor's first instructions were to stop sleeping with the window open when the temperature dropped. In hindsight, I feel a little bad for that.

As long as you didn't send a message to the author asking why they ruined the good idea with that lame ass pairing, I don't think it's too terribly hypocritical. I'm a big advocate of the back button in those cases.

Pneumonia sucks. Especially on a holiday. I hope you can find some fic that makes you feel better. I can't really rec anything for you since the fic I read when I'm feeling bad is generally either yours or Lanning's (which I assume you've probably read).

Yeah, I had a viral pneumonia a few years ago. I was out of work for a month. Had to work up the energy to get to the bathroom, and sat in my comfy chair sweating like I had run a marathon each time I went. Sucked. Too sick to read, or write, couldn't even watch TV much (though I could listen to it).

It was treating my asthma that finally knocked it on the head, got my lungs into condition to fight it off.

So yeah, I know how you feel. And you pretty much have to ride it out. So, just lay back, close your eyes and imagine John and Rodney going at it like a couple of minks. That should help boost your immune system a little.

Thinking it and flaming the author with it are two entirely different things. One is an opinion to which you are entitled and the other is entitlement, which is juvenile in a way that insults juveniles.

In the midst of a feral conscience attack, that sort of think isn't very helpful, I know. Why don't you go get Matt Sheppard naked? It always makes me feel better!

I hate being ill, too and pneumonia really does suck. Also reading good fanfic soothes body and mind, so is obviously beneficial for your recovery.
It's annoying when you read a great summery but then there is something in the warnings or the pairing that you just can't stand.
I myself am also not too great a fan of either Ginny or Jennifer. There is only one fic that centers on Ginny that i really like (pairing Ginny/Pansy - matching muff matrimony) because it doesn't turn her into someone nice just to make the story work.
Jennifer is way to chipper for my liking and almost as annoyingly patronizing as was Elisabeth - i can't stand people like that in RL why would i like read about them?

I've read a nice story 'behind the scenes' of the epilogue
http://www.ficwad.com/story/74884
It's called The Real Epilogue by DrT. Even if we still have H/G and Hr/R, in DrT reality these are just on the surface.
I'd also like to rec his time travel stories on the same archive (FicWad), the best one IMO is The Younger Potter Twin
http://www.ficwad.com/story/34656
I must warn you, he's writing het, mainly H/Hr, some H/G, and he's definitively NOT liking Draco, Snape & Dumbledore.

Finished The Real Epilog, and I must say that if Ginny can't be gone in some way, how she ended up here is about as good as it gets. :D Also, that Ron needed an ass-kicking.

Am about half-way through The Younger Potter Twin and am enjoying it exorbitantly. James Potter in the book needed an ass-kicking and appears to be getting all his needs fulfilled.

I don't think I've ever been on ficwad.com before. DrT seems to have quite a bit of material, but some of it has a big ?? and "blocked," so it looks as though that archive has some different mechanisms than what I'm used to.

Different can be good, though! Thanks for the recs. I was definitely getting a TTB vibe toward the end of The Real Epilog. ;D

My utmostest sympathies. I had pneumonia just once, but I really did it up right. I would have had to feel better to DIE. I remember lying in bed thinking I really, really needed to pee, but the bathroom was soooooo faaaaarrrr... and I'd fall back to sleep still thinking about it. I think the bathroom might have been as much as 15 feet from my bed.

Keeping the asthma under control is the secret as someone else said. We get so conditioned to just living with it we forget that asthma is an ACTUAL life threatening condition. Better living through chemistry.
